CHAPTER 20: EATING VINEGAR

Contrarily, this journey was more arduous than before.

The rugged mountain roads were already difficult to cross, together with a few frequently appearing tall trees that blocked half of their path, Ji Chuancheng needed to burn them down every time. Occasionally, they would also come across some mutant beast attacks that blocked their way. However, on the whole, only Yu Jie was needed to settle this matter.

Different from his straightforward and sunshine appearance like a boy next door, Yu Jie truly shocked Jing Xia. Yu Jie’s figure was tall and sturdy. Without even needing weapons, only relying on his iron fists, he was able to strike down a savage black bear. Moreover…… this was under the premise that Yu Jie still had not awakened his abilities.

To this day, after evolving, nearly three months had passed. The autumn days came swiftly and violently, letting one feel the piercing cold in the mountain even more. The sunlight was no longer brutally burning as before, shining onto the black Land Rover, neither hot nor warm as if the heat had been consumed by the layers of clouds.

Bypassing the last small mountain four meters above sea level, the two days of mountain roads had finally come to an end. The two traffic lanes suddenly widened into 4. A thick layer of dust that accumulated on the ground was raised by the passing vehicle. After the impressive black Land Rover had travelled for more than half an hour, it abruptly stopped because of a  “crunching” sound.

Ji Chuancheng expressionlessly turned around and said, “Qin Chu, you drive.”

Just at that time, Qin Chu sat in the back right seat sorting out the things in her medical box. Suddenly hearing Ji Chuancheng’s word, she lifted  her head and stared blankly. She confusedly pointed to her hideous mess of needles, liquids, and medical ingredients lying on her thigh and said, “Young Master, I’m tidying things up right now. This is not quite suitable, right?”

Ji Chuancheng swept his gaze over the things on her thighs and then turned his head to look at Yu Jie in the front passenger seat who had just woken up, saying, “Yu Jie, you drive. Qin Chu, sit in the front passenger seat.”

Right when Yu Jie was muddle-headed with sleep, he suddenly heard Ji Chuancheng’s order, which subconsciously aroused his spirit. Without objection, he loudly shouted “yes” and then got out of the car, heading towards the driver’s seat.

Qin Chu, “……”

No matter how speechless she was, Qin Chu could only get off the car, walked towards the front passenger seat, opened the door, and went into the car.

On the other side, Ji Chuancheng opened the car door on the right and entered. Just as he sat steadily, he saw Jing Xia hazily opening his eyes, spiritlessly mumbling, “A’ Chuan? Why did you come…… did something happen?” While speaking, Jing Xia moved his head from his thin and straight  shoulder. Due to his movements, the little black dumpling that was sleeping on his head was nearly thrown off. It hastily pushed with its small short legs, holding onto Jing Xia’s head with a death grip.

“En, nothing’s wrong. Just a bit tired, want to sleep for a while, have a rest.”

The car started again. After hearing Ji Chuancheng’s words, Qin Chu looked towards the other through the rearview mirror with astonishment. She blinked with doubt, thinking to herself, Young Master was not even tired after continuously hurrying on the night road for three days previously, how come he actually felt tired after just driving for half a day?

Yet Jing Xia did not think that much and just nodded. His eyelids drooped, making him want to go to sleep again. As soon as he closed his eyes and his head touched the back of the car seat, he fell into the land of dreams. His head fell towards the left side. As it was about to touch his slim shoulder, his head was suddenly caught by a hand with clear joints. Jing Xia’s head was gently pulled towards Ji Chuancheng’s side, steadily leaning against his own shoulder.

Jing Xia smacked his lips in his dream, only somewhat struggled for a while before continuing to fall into a deep sleep.

The car smoothly avoided multiple barricades, disordered cars, and trees. Some trees on the roadside were reaching through the clouds while others were still growing normally. The warm sunlight poured down, sprinkling onto the ground. The black Land Rover was steadily heading towards the direction of S City.

“Wasn’t Major Ji tired? A voice carrying laughter suddenly rang out, breaking the ambience within the car.

Suddenly hearing this person speak, Qin Chu and Yu Jie looked through the rearview mirror at the refined man with vigilance. Yet they only saw the latter gaze out the window with a face full of smiles, not having the intention to look inside the car at all. Ji Chuancheng did not have any particular reactions towards these abruptly spoken words. He gazed steadily ahead, not even a little fluctuation of emotion could be seen on his handsome face.

“En, I’m not tired now.”

Hearing this answer, the arc of Qi Yang’s lips rose again a bit higher, “Are you not preparing to give me a shirt to change? This shirt of mine, however, was torn by Jing Xia. En…… right at the chest ah. Oh, that’s right, it was truly out of my expectations. This Young Master Jing was really rough ah. I don’t know whether it was because he was anxious to save you?”

Hearing his eccentric words, Qin Chu’s complexion slowly darkened. She tightly clenched her fist and looked towards Qi Yang, saying, “Qi Yang, be a bit more honest, don’t think that we won’t kill you. Young Master merely preserved your life for the time being, but if you want to do bad things again, don’t blame us for using cruel means.

After Qi Yang heard her words, he smiled and spread out his hands, retracting his line of sight from the outside of the window, “Yes, yes, yes. Captain Qin, how could I not listen to your words? However, I seem to remember, my military rank is higher than yours ah.” In the end, it turned into a low laugh.

Qin Chu fumed, “You……!”

“Qin Chu, wait until later when we find a shirt for him to wear.” Ji Chuancheng said indifferently.

Qin Chu suddenly widened her eyes, “Young Master, this guy is clearly deliberately picking faults. It’s completely unnecessary for us to pay attention to……” Qin Chu’s voice faded away. She saw Ji Chuancheng’s apathetic and calm gaze, only feeling an astringent taste in her throat. In the end, she could only swallow down her remaining words.

Choked with resentment, she turned her body around. Qin Chu indignantly glared at Qi Yang with anger through the rearview mirror, coldly sneering and no longer spoke.

Qi Yang turned his head around. His line of sight seemed to size up the sleeping Jing Xia by accident. Then, he raised his head to look at Ji Chuancheng who was still calm and unhurried, saying, “Major Ji, I remember that the general had said a sentence like this when he was still alive——‘The people of the Restricted Zone, absolutely cannot have a single weakness.’ I don’t know if you still remember?”

Ji Chuancheng coldly turned his head and gave Qi Yang a glance, slightly nodding, “En.”

Qi Yang suddenly let out a sound of laughter. His delicate and handsome appearance was completely relaxed. “Fortunately Major Ji left long ago, otherwise if he saw his only son actually took the lead in going against him, what would his expression look like?”

“Qi Yang!” This sentence even stimulated Yu Jie to snarl with anger.

Yet, the person involved did not seem to have a very big reaction towards this malicious provocation. Ji Chuancheng merely turned around, and for the first time in these days, he seriously looked at Qi Yang with a calm complexion. His tranquil gaze stopped over Qi Yang’s body for a long while. One was indifferent and silent, the other had an ice-cold smile. After a long time, Ji Chuancheng said, “Major Qi, always, you seem to be very interested in my personal matters?”

Qi Yang raised an eyebrow, “In you?”

Abruptly understanding the hidden meaning behind these words, his eyes suddenly darkened. Ji Chuancheng silently reached out and held the youth’s shoulder, pulling the other towards his own seat.

Ji Chuancheng flatly said, “You grew up in the Restricted Zone as a child. This is probably your first time coming out, it’s normal for you to have a little interest in the outside world.” After a short pause, he continued, “However, Major Qi, I feel that S City will definitely make you even more interested.”

Qi Yang froze, “Why?”

A bone-chilling cold blade-like gaze ruthlessly scanned Qi Yang’s whole body. Ji Chuancheng slowly curved up his lips, revealing an imperceptible smile, “Because there are many people who are interested in you. There are also many who enjoy dissecting like you. For example, the muscle tissues of a strengthened human, the photoreceptor cells of a night vision user, as well as…… the brain of a smart person.”

Ji Chuancheng’s voice was utterly levelled as if he was saying things that are common and could be heard anywhere. However, the temperature following his words suddenly fell down a few degrees. Even the robust and simple Yu Jie subconsciously shrunk his neck, touching the fine hairs on his arm that were pricked up.

The smile hanging off Qi Yang’s lips abruptly stiffened. Only after a long time did he speak, “Major Ji’s words are really interesting, I truly am…… very·much·looking·forward·to·it.” Every word seemed to have been stifled in his throat, carrying with it a low laugh. No matter how one listened to it, there was always the meaning of teeth gnashing.

“En, there’s no need to be too excited. We can definitely arrive at S City in at most 2 days.”

Qi Yang, “……”

Qin Chu could not help but look at Ji Chuancheng via the rearview mirror, helplessly smiling.

She knew that the Young Master was never someone who could be forced to suffer in silence. From a young age, aside from that little bastard, she really had not seen anyone who was able to benefit from Young Master’s hands. Although he had an ineloquent, cold appearance on the outside, she knew that Young Master definitely had a bellyful of bad water*…… eh…… a bellyful of wisdom and ideas.

*T/N: To have a lot of evil tricks

The warm red sun slowly approached the west. Jing Xia dazedly rubbed his eyes and got up. On his head, that chubby little black dumpling also rocked awake because of his movements. One person and a hamster tacitly rubbed their eyes in an unusually tacit understanding. After some time, it was still the mutant hamster that had first chirped “jiji”, before Jing Xia had completely woken up.

“Hey, A’ Chuan, where are we? S City?”

Ji Chuancheng shook his head, “We are probably going to cross H Province’s border.”

Jing Xia frowned, “Why is it this slow? I felt that the speed wasn’t slow ah……” Through the window, Jing Xia saw a desert poplar tree carelessly brandishing its branches in the air. He swallowed a mouthful of saliva and ruefully said, “Is it becoming a spirit…… ?”

He only saw a thick, fierce branch suddenly grow, thrashing towards the car travelling in the middle of the road. Ji Chuancheng calmly opened the car window, hoisting the silver □□ a bullet. It was only approximately 5 cm from the car. That thick, ugly branch struggled before stopping and falling down with a bang. It seemed to chaotically twitch in pain on the ground, fresh green liquid flowed out from the branch.

Jing Xia, “!”

This guy’s actions were too confident and calm, right?!

Ji Chuancheng, “This Qi Yang branch is a little crude.”

“?”, Jing Xia stared blankly, “It’s Hu Yang*.”

*T/N: A play on words as the desert poplar is Hu Yang in Chinese. Ji Chuancheng is making fun of Qi Yang by missaying his name with the tree species

Ji Chuancheng nodded, “En, I said it wrong.”

Qi Yang, “……”
